Fall Friends Table Runner

Finished Size (Approx. 28 ½” wide x 10 ¼”)

Depends on your block sizes (assuming 9” x 9” finished blocks):

  • 3 blocks across = 27” wide
  • Add borders if you want extra length/width. (I used 1 ½” borders around the entire table runner) And a 2 ¼” binding with a scant less than a ½” seam allowance for the binding.

Materials List

***I quilted the background fabric of each block before assembling the table runner! This is instructed for each block in each separate pattern!

  • Backing Fabric: approx. 1 yard (gives plenty for ~36” x 15” finished runner, with extra for quilting shrinkage and trimming).
  • Batting: Piece at least 33” x 15”. Cotton, cotton/poly blend, or fusible fleece. (This is a personal preference)
  • Binding Fabric: approx 90” long (I prefer 2 ¼” binding) but you can use your preferred width!
  • Border/Spacer Fabric (optional): approx. ¼ yard if you’d like sashing between blocks or a frame around them.
  • Thread: To coordinate or contrast for quilting and binding.

Assembly Instructions

1. Arrange Your Blocks

  • Lay out Chestnut, Fall Leaves, and Patchy Pete in a row.
  • Add sashing: If you are using in between the blocks.
  • Sew blocks (and sashing if used) together with ¼” seam allowance.
  • Press seams open or to the side.

2. Add Borders (Optional)

  • For a frame: cut border strips 1 ½” wide.
  • Measure the length of your block row, cut top and bottom borders to match. Sew and press.
  • Then measure across width, cut side borders to match, sew and press.

3. Layer the Runner

  • Press your top well.
  • Lay backing fabric right side down.
  • Place batting on top.
  • Center the table runner top right side up.
  • Smooth out layers and baste with pins or spray baste.

4. Quilting

**I used a decorative stitch in between each block first, then around the entire 3 blocks. (In between blocks and border)

**Each block should already be quilted as instructed at the start of this pattern!

  • Quilt around the perimeter of the blocks as you desire.

5. Trim & Square

  • Trim excess batting and backing, squaring the runner.

6. Binding

  • Cut (4) 2 ¼” x WOF strips from binding fabric.
  • Join ends diagonally to make one long strip. Approx. 90”
  • Fold strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, press.
  • Attach binding to front with ½” seam, and using a straight stitch. Mitering corners.
  • Wrap to back, hand or machine stitch down. I used a quilting stitch (blanket stitch) after wrapping, front to back. You can use a straight stitch to stitch in the ditch. I use a blanket stitch because the bite will catch the back of the binding if I sew a little uneven😊

Give your table runner a good press all over!

Congratulations! You’re done!
